Suntech was founded in 2001 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, China, by Dr. Shi Zhengrong, a 36-year-old scientist who had previously earned his PhD from the University of New South Wales in Australia. There, as part of a renowned thin-film solar cell research group led by one of the pioneers of photovoltaics, he served as a senior researcher and was directly involved in the developments that later laid the foundation for the industrial production of silicon solar cells. Upon returning to China in 2000, Shi Zhengrong, with the support of the Wuxi provincial government (with a start-up capital of approximately five million dollars) and a team of only twenty employees, founded a company that within a few years had become one of the largest silicon solar panel manufacturers in the world.

Suntech made history as the first private Chinese company to go public on the New York Stock Exchange in December 2005. The IPO raised $455 million and valued the company at over $5.5 billion, marking a milestone not only for the company but also for the entire Chinese solar industry, which was just beginning to make its mark on the global market. In essence, Suntech was one of the pioneers who paved the way and established the reputation of Chinese solar technology as a serious player rather than a budget alternative.

The founder's scientific background also determined the brand's technological style: Suntech traditionally pays special attention to research in the field of increasing the efficiency of silicon cells and reducing optical and resistive losses in the panel structure.
