History and development path

The history of LONGi began on February 14, 2000 in Xi'an, when engineer Li Zhen-guo, together with fellow students - specialists in semiconductor materials and metallurgy, including Zhong Baosheng - founded the Xi'an LONGi Silicon Materials Corporation. At a time when the vast majority of solar panel manufacturers were betting on cheaper polycrystalline silicon, the founders of LONGi made the opposite choice - to focus on monocrystalline silicon, which is technologically more complex to produce, but capable of providing significantly higher cell efficiency. This decision, which at the start seemed risky, later determined the vector of development of the entire industry: today monocrystalline panels dominate the global market, and LONGi is the world's largest manufacturer of monocrystalline silicon wafers.

In February 2017, after acquiring manufacturer LERRI Solar, the company changed its name to LONGi Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd., removing the Xi’an connection and emphasizing a broader production scale, from silicon ingots and wafers to finished photovoltaic modules and solar power plants. The company’s shares are traded on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and industry analysts estimate that as of 2022, LONGi controlled more than 30% of the global silicon wafer market for solar power and shipped 37.5 gigawatts of finished modules, a volume that gives an idea of the company’s true industrial scale.

The brand's origin from the semiconductor, rather than purely "solar" industry, is not a formality, but a practical advantage for the buyer.
