The EzLogger line: why a data logger matters

A GoodWe data logger is a device that collects readings from an inverter — or several inverters at once, if needed — and relays them to the SEMS Portal monitoring platform over a network connection. The category includes three models in the EzLogger line: EzLogger3000C, EzLogger3000U and EzLogger3000U-A, differing in network connection method and the amount of equipment that can be grouped into a single monitoring circuit.

Ethernet or Wi-Fi: choosing a connection type

The basic function of any data logger is to bridge the local inverter electronics, which have no direct internet access on their own, with a cloud monitoring platform accessible to the owner or a service company from anywhere. Without a logger, an inverter runs autonomously, governed only by its built-in logic, but with no remote visibility, historical analytics, or fault alerts to a smartphone.

The difference between EzLogger models mostly comes down to network connection type: some variants target wired Ethernet for sites with stable cabled infrastructure, others target Wi-Fi for faster installation without running an extra cable to the inverter's mounting location. Choosing a connection type should match actual site conditions: a garage or basement utility room may have a weak Wi-Fi signal, making a wired connection the more reliable choice.

Multiple inverters in one circuit and installation

For sites with several GoodWe inverters — a large private home or a commercial space with distributed generation, for instance — a logger lets you combine all devices into a single monitoring circuit, displaying total generation and consumption figures on one screen instead of switching between each inverter's separate interface.

Installing a data logger doesn't require complex intervention in the inverter system itself: the device connects to the inverter's communication port and to the local network, then automatically registers on the SEMS Portal platform under a unique identifier. That's fundamentally simpler than more complex industrial monitoring systems that need separate protocol configuration for every connected device.

Connection stability, updates, service and how to choose

Remote monitoring via SEMS Portal, enabled by the logger, lets an owner track system status from any device — a smartphone, tablet or computer — receive alerts about inverter operating deviations before they grow into a visible drop in generation, and schedule maintenance based on actual data rather than a fixed calendar.

Connection stability directly affects how complete the historical data in SEMS Portal is: brief connection drops usually aren't critical, since the device caches readings locally and syncs them once connection is restored, but an extended network outage means a gap in analytics that can't be recovered after the fact. For sites with unstable internet, it's worth considering a model that supports a backup communication channel.

Logger firmware updates happen remotely through SEMS Portal, with no need for physical access to the device — especially convenient for sites located far from the service company or hard to reach for regular visits. The manufacturer periodically releases improvements to compatibility with newer inverter models and to the monitoring platform's own functionality.

For service companies managing several client sites at once, having a data logger on each site turns a routine equipment status check from a mandatory on-site visit into a review of readings through a single interface, substantially cutting the cost of servicing a large client portfolio.

It's also worth checking a logger's supported inverter count against the actual size of a planned installation before ordering, since a unit rated for a small residential setup may hit an undocumented ceiling on a larger commercial array, forcing a costly swap after the system is already wired and running.
