GoodWe ES G2 Review: Single-Phase Hybrid Inverters for Home Use (3–6 kW)

The GoodWe ES G2 series is a range of single-phase, low-voltage (48 V) hybrid inverters designed for residential solar systems with battery storage. The lineup typically covers 3 to 6 kW models and focuses on increasing self-consumption: the inverter manages power flows between PV panels, the home, the grid, and the battery to reduce energy purchased from the utility.
Key technologies and advantages
  • Fast backup switching (UPS-level): automatic transfer to backup mode in under 10 ms. This is important for household loads sensitive to voltage dips.

  • Passive cooling: cooling is based on natural convection, meaning no fan. In practice, this results in very low noise, which makes the series suitable for installation close to living areas (utility room, technical cabinet, hallway), provided ventilation and temperature limits are respected.

  • High efficiency: declared up to 97.6% max efficiency and 96.7% European efficiency, with 99.9% MPPT efficiency. This directly impacts annual energy yield.

  • 2 MPPT inputs (for most models): helpful for PV arrays with different tilt/azimuth, which is common on complex roofs.

  • 48 V battery compatibility: support for lithium and lead-acid batteries, with CAN communication to the BMS.

  • Safety features: built-in protections, DC/AC Type II SPD, Remote Shutdown, and optional AFCI on the DC side.

Residential use cases and operating conditions
  1. Day-night energy independence: PV covers household loads and charges the battery during the day; in the evening the home runs from the battery. Nighttime self-consumption is low (often specified as <10 W).

  2. Backup for critical circuits: lighting, router, boiler controls, pump, refrigerator can be powered via the backup output, with switching that is typically unnoticeable.

  3. Smart load control: dry-contact load control can be used for devices such as a water heater, underfloor heating, or additional loads based on PV generation or battery state of charge (SOC). The platform is also positioned for smart-home integration via multi-protocol communication.

Fast and easy installation

GoodWe emphasizes Plug & Play, a compact wall-mount design, and relatively low weight—this helps reduce installation time and avoids complicated mounting solutions on typical residential sites. For home projects, communication options are practical as well: RS485 for the meter, plus Wi-Fi / Wi-Fi+LAN / 4G for monitoring.

Scaling: parallel operation

The ES G2 series supports parallel operation, which allows increasing total power and strengthening backup capacity when one inverter is no longer sufficient (for example, with electric heating or larger homes).
Integration with Home Assistant and openHAB (OpenHub)
  • Home Assistant: there is a dedicated GoodWe Inverter integration that works with the ES family and polls the inverter locally on the home network, exposing sensors for automations and energy monitoring (often via UDP, depending on model/firmware).

  • openHAB: for systems connected to the SEMS Portal, an official SEMSPortal binding (read-only) can pull production and key statistics from the cloud, which is convenient for dashboards and basic automation logic.

Summary: GoodWe ES G2 is a strong residential choice for PV + battery systems where silence (passive convection cooling), sub-10 ms backup switching, fast installation, parallel scalability, and smart-home readiness are important. For “home + storage” projects in the 3–6 kW class, it is a practical and well-balanced solution.
