FOX ESS CQ16 BMS BOX is a battery management module for storage systems based on CQ16 blocks. This is not a battery or additional capacity, but the "brain" of the assembly: a device that monitors the state of each element, controls charge and discharge, and connects the storage device to the inverter. IP20 version for indoor installation, 60-month warranty.
What BMS actually does
A lithium battery is not a single reservoir of energy, but a set of cells connected in series. Each of them has its own slight variation in capacity and internal resistance, and this variation increases over time. Without control, the assembly degrades along the weakest element: one cell reaches its limit before the others and limits the operation of the entire system.
This is what the BMS does. The module constantly measures the voltage of each cell, the temperature at different points of the assembly, the charge and discharge current, and also calculates the actual charge level. If necessary, it equalizes the charge between the cells, bringing the lagging ones up to the level of the rest.
Money-saving security features
The second role of the BMS is emergency protection. The module breaks the circuit when the parameters go beyond safe limits:
excess voltage on the cell during charging;
deep discharge below the permissible threshold;
overcurrent or short circuit;
temperature exceeding the operating range in both directions.
Why this is not a detail to save on
The battery part of the storage system is always the most expensive. The control module costs a small fraction of that, but it is what determines whether the battery will last the claimed six thousand cycles or lose capacity in a few years.
A telling analogy is the engine lubrication system. It costs a penny compared to the engine itself, but without it the engine won't travel even hundreds of kilometers. The same goes here: an attempt to assemble a storage device without full control usually ends in premature battery replacement, i.e. costs tens of times greater than the savings.
Communication with the inverter
The third function is communication. The BMS transmits data to the inverter about the current state of charge, permissible currents and temperature limits. It is thanks to this exchange that the inverter knows how much power it can charge the battery right now and when it is time to stop.
Without this connection, the inverter works blindly, at average settings, and the system loses both efficiency and resource. Therefore, when selecting equipment, it is worth checking in advance the supported exchange protocols between specific inverter models and BMS.
What to ask before buying
IP20 design means installation in a dry room - the module has no protection against moisture, unlike the CQ series battery packs themselves.
Also pay attention to the warranty period: 60 months versus 120 months for battery modules. This is normal practice for electronics, but it is better to know about the difference in advance than to find out in the sixth year of operation.
