Sixteen PoE ports on board: wiring without a separate switch

Sixteen PoE ports across the rear panel mean sixteen cameras, each reached by a single UTP run that carries power and video at the same time. That removes a sixteen-port PoE switch from the budget and, more importantly, removes the need to pull a separate 12 V line with its own power brick to every mounting point under the eaves. Each port delivers up to 25 W under IEEE 802.3af/at, so the recorder feeds not only ordinary bullet cameras drawing 6-12 W but also pan-tilt models with a spotlight and motorised zoom such as the Reolink P840 from this same catalogue. In total the unit handles up to 24 channels: sixteen wired cameras on its own ports plus as many as eight battery Wi-Fi cameras joined over the house network. One practical caveat: the camera ports run at 100 Mbps, which is plenty even for a 12 MP stream, yet the cable itself should be solid copper — beyond roughly 80 metres the cheap copper-clad aluminium sold as UTP loses both voltage and packets.

A 4 TB drive already fitted, with the second bay left free

In this configuration the recorder ships with a 4 TB drive already installed, so nothing has to be bought separately, checked for compatibility or formatted by hand — the archive starts filling the first time you power it up. There are two SATA bays inside, which leaves the second one for expansion: Reolink's own documentation for this platform allows up to 8 TB per bay, the product card here states a more conservative 6 TB, and planning around the lower figure is the safer habit. Whatever you add should be a surveillance-grade drive rated for continuous duty, because an ordinary desktop HDD pulled from a PC wears out noticeably faster under 24/7 writing — stay with the WD Purple, Seagate SkyHawk or equivalent families. There is no RAID here: the two disks behave as two independent volumes, so a failure takes down everything stored on that particular drive while the other one survives untouched. Hot swap is absent as well, meaning the recorder has to be powered down and opened to add or change a disk, which makes that job part of scheduled maintenance rather than something done on the fly.

How many days of archive actually fit: the numbers worked through

Archive depth is easy to estimate: one megabit per second of stream is roughly 10.8 GB per day, and Reolink cameras in H.265 produce about 4 Mbps at 5 MP, 8 Mbps at 8 MP and up to 12 Mbps at 12 MP. Fill all sixteen channels with 4K cameras recording around the clock and the system writes close to 1.4 TB per day, so the factory 4 TB covers roughly three days — that is not a miscalculation but plain arithmetic for sixteen 4K channels. The same layout built on 5 MP cameras generates about 690 GB per day, which works out to almost six days of history, and a realistic eight-camera 5 MP installation stretches that to roughly twelve days. Adding a 6 TB disk in the second bay lifts the pool to 10 TB and multiplies those figures by about two and a half: sixteen 5 MP cameras hold around fifteen days, eight cameras close to a month. The strongest lever, though, is switching from continuous to event recording, since person and vehicle detection cuts out the empty hours and typically stretches the same disk two to three times further, at the cost of losing the background between events.

12 MP per channel: recording without re-encoding, and why it matters

The recorder accepts and stores up to 12 MP per channel according to the product card, while Reolink's documentation for the NVS16 platform quotes 16 MP — and the point is not the number itself but the fact that nothing is re-encoded on the way to the disk. Cheaper recorders capped at 4 or 5 MP will happily accept a stream from an 8 MP camera and then write it at reduced resolution, so you pay for a 4K camera and end up reviewing Full HD footage. Here a 12 MP feed from a Reolink P340 or RP-PCB12M lands on the platter exactly as the camera produced it, and a frame-by-frame review shows the very details the expensive camera was bought for. Both codecs are available: H.265 halves the file size for the same picture and is what every storage figure above assumes, while H.264 stays for compatibility with older cameras and external players. HDMI and VGA run simultaneously and support up to 3840×2160, so a sixteen-tile mosaic stays legible on a large monitor and the second screen can live at the till or the guard post.

Where this recorder belongs and what kind of site it was built for

Sixteen ports describe a site rather than an apartment: a production floor, a warehouse with several gates, a service station or car wash, a school, an apartment block with entrances and a playground, or a chain store with a sales floor, stockroom and checkout line. A typical layout on such a property puts four to six cameras along the perimeter fence, two or three on gates and vehicle entries, and the rest indoors covering corridors, the till and the areas where stock is kept. The metal chassis measures 330×285×45 mm and weighs 2.4 kg, sized for a shelf in a rack or a lockable cabinet — and that matters, because a recorder holding the archive becomes a target itself and must never sit in plain view on the sales floor. An operating range of -10 to +55 °C and IP20 rating mean a dry heated room: an unheated gatehouse or an outdoor box without a heater will kill the unit over a Ukrainian winter. If you run four to eight cameras with no growth planned, a sixteen-channel recorder is money spent on nothing — it earns its price when you have eight cameras today and expect twelve next year.

Compatibility: Reolink cameras appear by themselves, others lose features

With Reolink cameras the recorder is genuinely plug-and-play: plug the cable into a PoE port and the camera shows up in the channel list on its own, with an address, the correct time and recording settings, without typing credentials or scanning the subnet. The Reolink app and the Windows or macOS client show the recorder's archive and any standalone cameras in one window, remote access runs through P2P without a public IP address and without a mandatory paid plan — the cloud only matters if you want a second copy of footage stored off site. Third-party cameras can be added, since the RLN16-410 platform speaks ONVIF and RTSP and a Hikvision or Dahua unit will technically connect. What you give up should be stated plainly: AI person and vehicle detection from a foreign camera will not reach the Reolink app as alerts, two-way audio usually stops working, and part of the configuration stays reachable only through that camera's own web interface. Mixed-brand systems therefore make sense as a transitional arrangement while equipment is being replaced, not as the configuration you deliberately aim for.

How it compares with neighbouring recorders in this catalogue

Its closest relative here is the Reolink RLN16-410 without HDD: identical platform, the same sixteen PoE ports, only with empty bays. The gap is cheaper while a 4 TB surveillance drive costs noticeably less than that, so if you are willing to buy and fit a disk yourself the cheaper listing wins — this bundle is for buyers who want a working system straight out of the box and a single warranty covering recorder and drive together. The Reolink NVS8 offers eight ports instead of sixteen and also ships bare: for a system of up to eight cameras it costs half as much and restricts nothing except channel count. The Reolink NVS36 takes up to thirty-six channels but has no PoE ports at all, so a switch has to be purchased alongside it — a sensible route only where the network already exists. From other brands, the Hikvision DS-7616NXI-K1(B) and the Dahua DHI-NVR2116HS-I2 are both sixteen-channel and clearly cheaper, yet both arrive without PoE and without a disk, so once a switch and storage are added the totals converge.
