A compact dome that does not change the look of the room

DomeCam Mini HL is a flat dome 114 mm across and 67 mm tall weighing 430 g, so it barely protrudes from the ceiling and does not make a visitor feel watched. In a shop floor, a reception area, an office or a porch that has a very practical consequence: the camera does not spoil the interior and does not provoke customers, while remaining a full recording device. The dome shape is also the hardest to damage - the IK08 housing withstands a blow from a hard object and there is nothing to grab and twist, unlike a bullet camera on a bracket. The price of that compactness is less freedom of aim: a dome is designed for a ceiling or a high wall position and looks downward at an angle, which makes it awkward for watching along a long fence. If what you actually want is a demonstrative camera visible from far away that deters by its presence, the logic points to the cylindrical BulletCam HL rather than to this dome.

Fifteen metres of illumination - the number that decides whether this model fits

The key difference between DomeCam Mini HL and the rest of the Ajax HL line is an effective illumination range of 15 metres instead of 50, and it is that number which determines where the camera belongs. Fifteen metres is more than enough for a room, a corridor, a till area, a small sales floor, a stairwell, a two-car garage or a porch with its path; a yard thirty metres deep is out of reach, and the far part of the frame will simply stay dark. It is important to understand that both infrared and white light are limited to the same 15 metres: the camera does not "see worse" further out, it simply has nothing to light the far zone with, and at night that zone stays empty regardless of resolution. Where some background lighting exists, the working distance is greater, because at 0.005 lux the camera still holds a colour frame without its own LEDs. The rule of thumb is simple: interiors and covered areas near a building are this model's territory; open ground, driveways and perimeters call for TurretCam HL or BulletCam HL with their fifty metres.

5 MP at close range: exactly what outdoor cameras cannot give you

The same 5 MP sensor (2880x1620) used by the bigger models of the series behaves completely differently at short range: outdoors a face is identifiable only in the first few metres of the frame, whereas indoors the entire scene sits inside that zone. A till, an entrance door, a desk with documents or a safe ends up three to six metres from the lens, and the recording shows not a silhouette but facial features, the note in someone's hand, the label on a product. About 110 degrees of horizontal coverage from a three-metre ceiling produces a band roughly eight to nine metres wide at floor level, so a single camera takes in a standard room or a small hall completely. Up to 25 frames per second matters indoors precisely because movement happens close to the lens and fast: at 12-15 frames a hand taking goods off a shelf smears between frames. The trade-off of a wide angle is there too - the edges of the frame carry noticeable perspective distortion, and if you need tight control of one point, the till for instance, it is better to bring the camera closer than to zoom digitally afterwards.

Hybrid illumination indoors: when to use colour and when to switch it off

Hybrid Light means white LEDs sit alongside the infrared ones and the camera turns them on by itself once the analytics has recognised a person or a vehicle. In an unoccupied space at night this is close to ideal: a closed shop, a dark storeroom, an empty corridor - and anyone who appears there lands instantly in a colour frame with readable clothing, footwear and whatever they are carrying. The reverse effect exists as well: a sudden burst of light in the dark tells a person they have been noticed, which is a plus for an empty building and an obvious minus for a bedroom where a child is asleep. That is why the white light can be disabled entirely, leaving infrared only, and a monochrome night frame at fifteen metres will still be sharp. The smartest configuration for a shop or an office is to tie the white light to the arming mode: during business hours it is unnecessary, and at night, with the site armed, it both illuminates and deters.

Analytics, sound and a local archive on a memory card

The camera separates people, vehicles and animals on its own, which is not an abstraction but a filter for notifications: a shop owner gets a push not for every shadow in the window but when a person has entered the hall. The built-in microphone records sound, and indoors sound is often more valuable than the picture - it captures a conversation at the till or the noise of breaking glass before anyone appears in the frame. The legal side deserves a thought: audio recording in a space used by customers or staff requires a notice about video surveillance with sound, so the sign at the entrance is worth updating in advance. A microSD card of up to 256 GB keeps a local archive for the times when the recorder is unpowered or the network is down, and on a small site it can remove the need for an NVR altogether. H.265 and H.264 offer a choice: H.265 is about twice as economical, so the same card holds twice as long a period of footage.

Power, mounting and the -30 to +55 C limit

Power comes from 12 V or PoE, with consumption up to 7.2 W over PoE and about 6.1 W from 12 V, so four of these cameras run comfortably from a 30 W switch. Remember that the Ajax NVR has no PoE ports: camera power has to be planned around a separate PoE switch or 12 V supplies, and that belongs in the budget before you order. IP66 allows the camera to be taken outdoors - onto a porch, under a canopy, into an unheated annex - but its working range is -30 to +55 C, five degrees lower at the top than the outdoor models of the series, which matters in direct summer sun on a south-facing wall. Mounting is on a ceiling or high on a wall using the standard dome base; 430 g needs no reinforced fixing and the cable enters through the central hole, so nothing is left exposed. Its two bigger siblings, Ajax TurretCam HL and Ajax BulletCam HL, cost the same and carry the same sensor and analytics but illuminate to fifty metres instead of fifteen; if the camera is to watch a yard, the choice is clearly theirs and DomeCam Mini HL would be a mistake. Ajax TurretCam without HL is cheaper cheaper and also reaches fifty metres, but gives only a monochrome night image - outdoors that is often a sensible compromise, while indoors colour at night is usually the very reason the camera is being installed. The same dome in an 8 MP version costs more: more pixels on the same scene pay off in a large hall or where fragments of the recording will later be enlarged. Outside the Ajax ecosystem, comparable dual-light domes are noticeably cheaper - the Hikvision DS-2CD1143G2-LIUF Smart Hybrid Light or the Dahua DH-IPC-HDW2449T-S-IL; if you simply need a camera for a recorder and there is no alarm system in the building, they are objectively better value. Paying more for DomeCam Mini HL makes sense when an Ajax hub is already installed: the camera appears in the same app, obeys the arming modes and sends video to the monitoring station together with the alarm from the detectors.
