A cylindrical body that is visible from a distance, and that is part of the protection
BulletCam HL uses a 198 mm elongated housing on a bracket, and it is the shape rather than the electronics that separates it from TurretCam HL, which shares the same internals. A bullet reads as a camera from twenty metres away, so anyone sizing up a fence or a shop window sees it before doing anything, and that deterrence works in the same way as a notice board about video surveillance. The integrated sun shield above the lens keeps direct rain and low sun off the glass, which makes the cylindrical shape more practical than a dome on an exposed facade where droplets would otherwise sit right in front of the optics. The cable is routed through the bracket, so there is no loop of wire on the wall for someone to cut, and the bracket still allows the camera to be turned on two axes after the holes have been drilled. The downside of being visible is equally obvious: a camera on a long arm is easier to knock aside with a stick than a turret ball, so a mounting height of three metres or more is a condition of normal operation rather than a suggestion.
Fifty metres of hybrid illumination: colour at night along a long boundary
HL stands for Hybrid Light: the camera carries infrared and white LEDs, both rated to fifty metres, and switches between them automatically according to what the analytics recognises. While the site is empty the invisible infrared does the work and nothing draws the neighbours' attention; the moment a person or a vehicle is classified, white light comes on and the recording becomes full colour. Fifty metres is the length of a typical residential fence or half the aisle between two rows of warehouse doors, so one camera lights the whole strip along which somebody is walking rather than a patch beneath itself. The brightness of the white light is adjusted in real time so a nearby object does not blow out into a white blob - this is exactly what cheap floodlight cameras lack, where a person two metres away becomes a solid glare. Keep one domestic detail in mind: if the camera faces the windows of a neighbouring house, nightly white flashes will become a source of conflict, and in that position it is wiser to leave the infrared-only mode enabled.
What you really see at 6, 13, 26 and 65 metres
Ajax publishes DORI distances for this model, and those numbers describe the camera far more honestly than the headline five megapixels. Detection of a moving person works up to 65 metres, which tells you only that somebody is in the frame; observation of behaviour up to 26 metres; recognition of a person you already know up to 13 metres; identification of a stranger with facial detail at roughly 6.4 metres. The practical conclusion is specific: to get footage that will stand up in a police report, position the camera so that the point of passage - the wicket gate, the door, the top step - falls within the first six or seven metres of the lens. The 2.8 mm f/1.6 optics cover about 110 degrees horizontally, which is a general view of the whole yard rather than a tube aimed at the gate, and it will not read a number plate at twenty-five metres. If plate reading at the entrance is the actual job, the catalogue carries the same BulletCam HL with a 4 mm lens in the same price bracket: a narrower field, noticeably more detail at distance.
120 dB WDR: backlight at the gate stops eating the picture
True WDR at 120 dB is the second most important figure after illumination, even though descriptions usually bury it in a spec list. The classic scene that breaks inexpensive cameras is a car pulling out of a dark yard into a bright street: the frame ends up either black inside or completely white outside. A camera with WDR shoots the same frame at several exposures and merges them, so detail survives in the shadows and outlines survive in the highlights - in practice the difference between "something drove out" and "a grey estate drove out". The same mechanism saves the daytime approach to a gate when the sun stands behind a visitor, and the night-time one when headlights point straight into the lens. Minimum illumination of 0.005 lux in colour means the camera still holds a colour frame under a lamp above the gate without firing the white LEDs, which means fewer activations and a longer life for the diodes.
Analytics, a microphone and a memory card as insurance against a broken link
Object classification - person, vehicle, animal - is performed by the camera's own processor, so the notification arrives with the event type already attached instead of a bare report that pixels changed. In practice this filters out the night-time push messages caused by a cat on the fence and leaves only what is worth looking at, and the same result drives the white light. The built-in microphone adds sound to the video, and on a yard or a warehouse floor sound often explains more than the image: you hear a lock being forced or a car pulling up outside the frame. The microSD slot takes a card up to 256 GB, which is not a replacement for a recorder but an insurance policy - if the cable is damaged or the recorder loses power, recording continues locally and is uploaded afterwards. H.265 and H.264 give a choice between economy and compatibility: H.265 is roughly twice as compact at the same quality, which translates directly into disk space on a long archive.
PoE power, IP66 and IK08: mounting on a facade, a pole or an entrance group
The camera runs from 12 V or PoE 802.3af/at with a maximum draw of 7.3 W, and that number matters when you size a system: eight of these come to about 58 W, so an ordinary 60-65 W PoE switch covers them with no headroom left for growth. Note separately that the Ajax NVR has no PoE ports of its own, so a PoE switch or injectors belong in the estimate from the start - this is the standard surprise on a first installation. IP66 means full dust protection and resistance to strong water jets, and IK08 means resistance to a blow from a hard object, so the camera survives both driving rain and a stone thrown by a teenager. The -30 to +60 C range is written for our winters: in January after a power cut this camera boots, whereas budget models rated only from -10 C frequently hang on start-up. For a tidy installation on a pole or an uneven wall the catalogue offers the Ajax JunctionBox, which hides the spare cable and the joints at the same protection class.

The most direct rival is Ajax TurretCam HL in the same price bracket: identical sensor, illumination, analytics and protection, differing only in shape, so the choice comes down to whether you want visibility and a sun shield (BulletCam) or compactness and resistance to being twisted by hand (TurretCam). Ajax DomeCam Mini HL also costs the same but illuminates only fifteen metres, which is fine for a porch, a corridor or a shop floor and wrong for a yard - the two scenarios should not be mixed up. If colour at night is not critical for you, the Ajax TurretCam without HL saves about with the same sensor, and it is a sound choice where a street lamp already burns above the site. The 8 MP BulletCam HL puts more pixels on the same scene and earns its price when the camera faces a wide front - a long shop window, a row of doors, a parking area for several cars. Outside the Ajax ecosystem, comparable bullets are the Hikvision DS-2CD2063G2-LI 6 MP or the Dahua DH-IPC-HFW2449S-S-IL: the Dahua is clearly cheaper, but neither will bind to an Ajax hub through scenarios and arming modes, and that binding is usually the whole reason for buying an Ajax camera.
