Imagine a normal evening: a working phase and zero come into the switchboard, the refrigerator works, the phones are charging. And then the zero contact burns out in the entrance. The voltage in your outlet in an instant becomes not 220, but, say, 340 V - and without protection that evening you lose all the electronics that are turned on together. DigiTOP VP-32A M2R is installed just for such scenarios. This is a version of the proven 32 A relay with a red status indicator; its electrical filling and protection thresholds are the same as in the M2W model - only the color of the backlight on the panel differs.
Why does color matter at all?
The question is not a cosmetic one, as it may seem. When there are several DigiTOP relays in a panel in different groups, different color indications help to distinguish devices at first glance during maintenance or diagnostics. Red is easy to read even in a poorly lit panel room or garage, without a flashlight. So the choice between M2R and M2W is not about "better/worse", but about how you are more comfortable navigating your own panel.
What exactly does it do?
The relay continuously measures voltage in the range of 50–400 V and disconnects the load when it exceeds the upper threshold (210–270 V) or lower (120–200 V). Overvoltage is cut off in 0.02 seconds, undervoltage in the range of 120–170 V — with a one-second pause so as not to react to safe short-term dips. The zero transit function monitors the most dangerous accident — a break in the neutral conductor — and de-energizes the line before the equipment burns out. Correct operation at an unstable frequency will be useful at facilities with a generator.
Installation practice
The rating of 32 A (about 7 kW at 220 V) is aimed at an apartment or a small house. The relay is mounted on a DIN rail, takes up 2 modules of 17.5 mm and is installed immediately after the input circuit breaker. The re-activation delay (5–600 seconds) should not be set to the minimum if there is a refrigerator or air conditioner in the network: the pause allows the compressor to stop correctly before starting again. And the main advice during installation is to carefully check that the phase and zero are connected to the correct terminals: mixed wires are the most common cause of the "strange" behavior of a newly installed relay. What does it NOT protect against?
Honesty is more important than marketing, so it is worth outlining the boundaries. A voltage relay protects against overvoltage, dips and zero interruption - but it is not a protective shutdown device (RCD) and does not replace it: a separate RCD is responsible for electric shock in case of insulation damage. Similarly, a relay is not a full-fledged protection against a direct lightning strike - this requires separate arresters (SPD). And it does not save from short-circuit currents - this is done by a circuit breaker. The correct logic is not "either the relay or the rest", but to build a complete protection of the shield, where each device is responsible for its own threat. A voltage relay in this context is the basic and cheapest level from which to start, because it is precisely voltage accidents in Ukrainian networks that occur most often.
