An intermediate step that often proves correct

Within the XS range this model sits between two and three kilowatts. Half a kilowatt may seem hardly worth noting — yet it is precisely such a step that allows the requirement to be met exactly rather than rounded upward.

The logic is straightforward: the inverter is sized to the panel array, and the array to the available roof area. Real roofs do not divide into round numbers. If a slope takes seven 400-watt panels, that is exactly 2.8 kW — and a 2.5 kW unit suits better than a three-kilowatt one, because it will run closer to its rating, where efficiency is at its peak.

Why an inverter is deliberately sized below the panels

This may seem odd, but in solar design inverter capacity is often specified below the array's total rating. A ratio of 1.1 to 1.3 to one is considered normal.

The reason is that panels almost never work at their nameplate output. That figure is measured under ideal conditions: perpendicular sunlight, a module temperature of exactly 25 °C, a clean surface. In reality the panel heats up and yields less, the sun sits at an angle, and the glass is covered in dust.

An inverter rated at 2.5 kW therefore serves a 3 kW array perfectly well: peak values are reached only a few hours a year, and the rest of the time the unit works in its optimal range. That gives higher annual efficiency and lower equipment cost.

That is convenient for the installer: one bracket type, an identical installation procedure, predictable labour. For the owner it means the option of changing the decision at the ordering stage with no consequences for the design: if refined calculations show a different rating is needed, the wall space and fixings remain the same.

Protection, communication and certification

The inverter has an integrated DC switch, Type II surge protection on the panel and grid sides, earth fault monitoring, protection against reverse polarity and short circuit, and an all-pole sensitive residual current monitoring unit.

IP65 protection and an aluminium housing are intended for outdoor installation. The operating range is −25 to +60 °C, humidity to 100% non-condensing, altitude to 4000 metres.

Monitoring is over Wi-Fi or wired LAN through the SEMS Portal app. Integration via Modbus TCP/RTU and Home Assistant is supported. Certification: CE, IEC 62109-1/2, IEC 62116, IEC 61727, EN 50549.
