GoodWe GMK110 is a single-phase energy meter for 220/230/240 V networks, intended to work as part of systems with hybrid and grid-tied inverters. The device is just 19 mm wide — a single DIN rail module — weighing 50 grams, with a polycarbonate housing and an operating range from −25 to +60 °C.

Why the system needs a separate meter

Almost everyone installing solar for the first time asks this: after all, the inverter measures what it produces. But it only sees its own generation, not what is happening at the site's incoming supply.

The meter is installed precisely at the boundary with the grid and shows the inverter the full picture: how much the house is consuming right now and which way the flow is going. Without that data the inverter works blind and cannot perform the most important task — keeping generation within your own consumption.

The main job: controlling export to the grid

For most owners this is the decisive function. In many cases exporting surplus to the grid is either unprofitable under the tariff or not permitted at all by the connection terms.

Receiving data from the meter, the inverter continuously compares generation against consumption and reduces output by exactly enough to keep the surplus out of the grid. This function only works when a meter is present — the inverter cannot provide such control on its own, because it cannot see the point of supply.

What accurate metering gives a household

• a correct calculation of the self-consumption share of solar energy;

• an understanding of your home's real daily load profile;

• proper battery charge management — surplus goes to storage rather than the grid;

• data for assessing payback on actual rather than estimated figures.

Compactness that solves a real problem

A width of one module is no small matter. In most private houses the distribution board was assembled before solar came along, and the free space left in it is usually one or two modules.

A 19 mm device can almost always be fitted without replacing the board or relocating protective gear. For comparison, three-phase meters in the same series occupy four modules, and there the question of space becomes far more pressing.

What to clarify before buying

Meters in this series differ not only in phase count but in how the measuring circuit is connected. Some are wired directly into the line, others work through current transformers that are bought separately and selected for your supply rating.

That is a fundamental distinction: fit a direct-connection device to a heavy supply and the meter simply is not rated for the current. Before ordering, therefore, establish three things — your supply rating, the connection method of the specific model, and whether current transformers are included in the set.

Installation conditions

An IP20 rating means installation inside a distribution board — which is exactly where the device belongs by design. An operating range from −25 to +60 °C allows the board to be located in an unheated room or in an outdoor enclosure sheltered from precipitation.

The housing is polycarbonate — a material resistant to heat and mechanical stress, used across most modular equipment. Before ordering, check the documentation for compatibility with your inverter model and for the measuring circuit connection method.
