Four channels, four PoE ports, one cable per camera

The NVS4 is built for exactly four IP cameras, and all four PoE ports sit inside the recorder itself, so there is no separate switch and no set of power adapters to budget for. Every port follows the IEEE 802.3af/at standard and delivers up to 25 W, which comfortably covers even a camera with strong infrared illumination or a heated housing for winter use. Reolink cameras connect plug-and-play: the recorder hands out addresses on its own subnet and picks the camera up in the interface without manual IP entry or routing work. There is one well-known practical limit — the Ethernet run from recorder to camera must stay under 100 metres, which matters on a property stretched along a fence and should be solved on the drawing, not on the ladder. Treat the four ports as a hard ceiling rather than a starting configuration: a fifth camera cannot be added even through an external switch, so if expansion is even remotely likely, the eight-channel model is the smarter buy.

No hard drive in the box — plan for it in the order

The NVS4 ships without a hard drive: there is a single SATA bay inside that accepts a drive of up to 6 TB, and that drive is purchased separately. The phrase "up to 6 TB" refers to that one disk, and since there is no second bay, 6 TB is also the ceiling for the entire system. Round-the-clock recording needs a surveillance-grade drive such as WD Purple or Seagate SkyHawk, because an ordinary desktop disk is rated for roughly eight hours of load per day and wears out noticeably faster under a 24/7 duty cycle. This model has no hot-swap, no RAID and no eSATA port, so replacing or upgrading the disk always means stopping the recording and opening the chassis. That is the practical argument for buying close to the maximum capacity up front instead of swapping a 2 TB disk for a 6 TB one a year later and losing everything already recorded.

How many days of footage fit: the arithmetic for one disk

Archive depth is easy to estimate: multiply the camera bitrate in megabits per second by roughly 10.8 and you get gigabytes per day. Under H.265, a 2 MP camera recording continuously consumes about 20-22 GB per day, a 4 MP camera around 43 GB, an 8 MP camera around 85 GB, and the recorder's maximum 16 MP roughly 150 GB. For a fully populated four-camera system on a 6 TB disk that works out to roughly 65-70 days at 2 MP, about 33-35 days at 4 MP, 15-17 days at 8 MP, and only 9-10 days if all four cameras run at 16 MP. Drop to a 2 TB disk and those same four 4 MP cameras give you barely 11-12 days, which is the single most common disappointment: the incident surfaces a fortnight later and the footage has already been overwritten. Treat these figures as a planning baseline — event-based recording instead of continuous stretches the archive several times over, while night illumination, rain and moving foliage push the bitrate up and shorten it.

Up to 16 MP per channel, 4K output and two monitors at once

Support for 16 MP cameras is unusual in a four-channel recorder, where 8 MP is normally the ceiling, and this is what separates the NVS4 from an ordinary budget four-channel box. The point is practical: a small site has few cameras, so each one has to do the work of two, and 16 MP lets you zoom into a frame from the gate and actually read a plate or recognise a face where 2 MP leaves a blur. The HDMI output runs at 3840x2160 and the VGA output at 1920x1080, and both work simultaneously, so the picture can be split between a screen in the sales area and a monitor in the office. Synchronous playback covers up to four channels, meaning an incident is reviewed across every camera on one timeline instead of one feed at a time. The trade-off deserves stating plainly: 16 MP only pays off with a monitor that can show it and a disk large enough to hold it, otherwise the extra detail eats the archive in a week.

The analytics live in the cameras, not in this recorder

The NVS4 offers classic motion detection, but it carries no AI analytics of its own — no perimeter protection, no line crossing, no heat mapping, unlike the higher RP-PNxx-NHD model in this same catalogue. That is a deliberate division of labour in the Reolink ecosystem: the camera classifies a person, a vehicle or an animal, and the recorder receives an already-labelled event and places it on the timeline. The conclusion for a buyer is direct — your set of smart notifications is decided by which cameras you install, not by the recorder, so saving money on cameras without AI devalues the whole system. There are no alarm inputs or outputs on the NVS4, so a siren, a door contact or a barrier cannot be wired in directly and every scenario stays inside the app. Third-party cameras will attach over ONVIF and RTSP, but part of the native functionality drops away, so mixed-brand systems are better built on another platform.

Where this model belongs and what it is meant to do

The natural home for an NVS4 is a private house where four positions cover everything: the driveway gate, the porch and front door, the back yard and the garage. It sits equally well in a small shop with a till, a shop window and a staff entrance, in an office with a corridor and reception, or at a service station watching the entrance and the working bays. The recorder speaks IP only, so a site already wired with coaxial cable for analogue cameras is the wrong match — that job belongs to a hybrid XVR rather than an NVR. An IP20 rating and a -10 to +45 C operating range mean a dry room or a wiring cabinet; an unheated container or garage that drops below -10 C in January is not a place for it. The limitation worth checking before you buy is growth: on a site where cameras keep being added, a four-channel recorder becomes the bottleneck within a season.

How it differs from the neighbouring Reolink recorders here

Its closest relative is the NVS8 (RLN8-410): same logic, same single bay up to 6 TB, but eight channels and eight PoE ports, which buys a lot of headroom for a modest step up. The NVS16 4TB (RLN16-410) differs on principle — sixteen channels, sixteen PoE ports and, crucially, a 4 TB drive already fitted, so the system runs straight out of the box with no separate disk purchase, and that alone often settles the decision. The RLN16-410 without HDD from the same family offers up to 24 channels and up to 8 TB, but like the NVS4 it leaves the drive to you. The NVS12W 2TB takes another route again: twelve channels and a bundled 2 TB disk, yet no built-in PoE at all, so camera power has to be solved with a separate switch. The honest summary: with exactly four cameras and no plans to grow, the NVS4 is the tidiest and most compact choice; with any hint of a fifth camera take the NVS8; and if you would rather not source a disk yourself, look at the models that already include one.
