Description Hikvision DS-71xxHGHI-M1(C)

A 5-in-1 hybrid DVR: the choice when coax is already in the walls

The DS-71xxHGHI-M1(C) is not a network NVR but a hybrid digital video recorder, and that is the single most important thing to understand before ordering. Its rear panel carries BNC inputs that accept analogue cameras in four different standards - HDTVI, HDCVI, AHD and plain CVBS - plus a few additional IP channels over the network, which is where the "5-in-1" label comes from. The practical meaning is narrow and useful: if a house, a shop or a car wash already has coaxial cable running to every camera, this recorder lets you leave the plaster and the cable routes untouched, swapping only the box and gaining H.265, a modern app and object classification. Pure NVRs from this same catalogue, such as the DS-7604NXI-K1(D) or the DS-7608NXI-I2/S(E), are helpless in that situation, because they cannot see coax at all and the whole cable plant would have to be redone in twisted pair. Conversely, for a brand-new installation a hybrid is a compromise, since the analogue path caps resolution harder than any IP camera of the same class.

Channel counts across the line and how many can become IP

The name DS-71xxHGHI-M1(C) with its two wildcard digits denotes a line rather than one model: it exists in 4, 8 and 16 analogue-input versions (DS-7104, DS-7108 and DS-7116 respectively), and all of them look nearly identical from the outside. This product card carries the code DS-7108HGHI-M1(C), that is the eight-channel build, while the specification table lists the channel count as 4 - so confirm the channel count with a salesperson before ordering rather than discovering you bought half the recorder you needed. The hybrid logic is the same across the line: on top of the analogue inputs the unit takes two extra IP channels, and if you sacrifice all the BNC inputs, the eight-channel version holds up to ten IP cameras at resolutions up to 5 MP. That makes staged modernisation easy - old analogue cameras keep working today, two new IP units go onto the critical points tomorrow, and a year later the site is fully IP without replacing the recorder. One caveat: ONVIF is not listed among this model's network protocols, so third-party IP cameras may not be picked up, and the hybrid channels should be planned around Hikvision cameras.

1080p Lite is the real ceiling, and what that looks like on screen

This is a Value-series unit and its analogue path tops out at 1080p, that is 2 MP, with recording done in 1080p Lite mode. Lite means the recorder stores a less detailed frame than full 1920x1080: that is fine for watching a room or a stairwell, but reading a number plate at a gate or identifying a face across a yard from such a recording will be hard. The second limit sits at the same level - the video outputs. HDMI and VGA work simultaneously but deliver Full HD 1920x1080 at most, so you can plug a 4K monitor in and get nothing extra from it. Total throughput of 72 Mbit/s across all channels matches this class and is not the bottleneck, because 1080p Lite streams in H.265 are small. The trade-off is honest: you are paying to preserve the existing cable plant and gain a modern codec, not for detail - and if you need 5 or 8 MP over that same coax, this catalogue offers the iDS-7108HQHI-M1/S(E) and the iDS-7208HUHI-M1/XT for exactly that.

Motion Detection 2.0 with human/vehicle classification - but no AcuSense

The main functional gain of the (C) suffix in this line is second-generation motion detection: a deep-learning algorithm separates people and vehicles from everything else that moves, and it works on all analogue channels. The difference from plain pixel-change detection is thoroughly practical - a cat in the yard, a branch in the wind, rain in a floodlight beam and a cloud shadow stop generating alerts, and the owner does not switch notifications off in week two. Do not confuse it with AcuSense, though: in this model's specification face recognition, line crossing, face capture, people counting and plate recognition are all marked as absent - there is none of that here, only classified motion detection and basic perimeter protection. There are no alarm inputs or outputs either, so an external PIR, a reed switch or a siren cannot be wired to the recorder and tied into a scenario; every reaction will be a video event. If faces and plates over an analogue path are the actual requirement, that is a different class of device, not a firmware setting.

One bay up to 4 TB: how many days of history you really get

The chassis has a single SATA bay for a 3.5-inch drive with a 4 TB ceiling, the disk is not included and there is no hot swap. Working the archive depth for the eight-channel build: 1080p Lite streams in H.265 run roughly 1 to 1.5 Mbit/s per camera, eight cameras total 8 to 12 Mbit/s, which is about 90 to 130 GB a day, so a 4 TB drive holds somewhere between one month and six weeks of continuous recording. The four-channel version stretches the same disk to roughly three months, while the sixteen-channel version drops to a little over two weeks, which is why a maximum-capacity drive here is standard practice rather than luxury. If you need more, the one effective lever is event-based recording instead of continuous: with classified motion detection that multiplies retention several times over, because on most sites nothing happens in frame for hours at night. Power draw of about 17 W from a 12 V supply and a compact 200 x 200 mm case just 48 mm tall mean the unit hides easily inside a low-voltage cabinet, and running it from an ordinary 12 V battery is far simpler than with mains-powered recorders.

Where this model fits and the jobs it genuinely handles

The classic case is replacing a worn-out analogue recorder on a site that has been running for seven to ten years: a small shop, a service garage, a cafe, an apartment-block entrance, a warehouse with four to eight overview cameras. There the brief is literally "we need to see what happens and keep a month of history", not "identify a face at the door", and 1080p Lite answers it without overpaying. It also works as a budget start for a cottage or a modest yard when the cameras being bought are analogue and the run is coax - one drum of cable and one power supply beat building a network. Where it does not belong: a vehicle gate where plates matter, a till or doorway where faces matter, and any site already cabled with twisted pair. One more case argues against it: if you are planning eight cameras today with a view to sixteen later, the 4 TB and 72 Mbit/s ceilings will bite soon, and buying the higher model up front is the cheaper decision.

How it compares with the neighbouring recorders in this catalogue

Its nearest relative is the Hikvision iDS-7108HQHI-M1/S(E): the same compact single-disk chassis and the same eight analogue inputs, but it ingests analogue up to 3K, adds AcuSense with face capture on several channels, a wider bandwidth and a drive up to 10 TB - that step up pays for itself if faces or a longer archive are on the requirement list. The bigger iDS-7208HUHI-M1/XT lifts the analogue path to 8 MP, adds face recognition, perimeter protection on all eight channels, a 4K output and a drive up to 12 TB, making it the pick when the coax has to yield everything it can. Dahua follows the same logic under different lettering: the DH-XVR5104C-4KL-I3 or DH-XVR51xxHS-5M-I3/T are XVR hybrids, usually chosen when the site already runs Dahua or HDCVI cameras. If there is no coax on site at all, the comparison should not be with hybrids but with pure NVRs - the DS-7604NXI-K1(D) for four cameras or the DS-7108NI-Q1/8P(D) with eight PoE ports will give you full 25-30 fps with no Lite modes. In short, the DS-71xxHGHI-M1(C) is the most affordable way to bring existing coax back to life, and in that role it makes perfect sense.

Tell us how many cameras you have, which standard they use and how many days of history you need, and we will say whether this model is enough or whether the 5-8 MP version is the better buy from the start.
