Eight PoE ports: one cable per camera, nothing else needed

Eight PoE ports on the rear panel mean eight cameras wired with a single cable each — the same twisted pair carries both the video stream and the power, so no separate adapter is needed at the camera end. The total PoE budget is 72 W and a single port can deliver up to 25.5 W under IEEE 802.3af and 802.3at, which is enough even for a PTZ camera or a model with powerful white illumination that plain 802.3af cannot start. The practical catch is that 72 W is the sum across all eight ports: eight ordinary bullet cameras draw 4-7 W each and will not even reach half the budget, while two PTZ units at 25 W will swallow almost all of it. Compare that with a recorder without built-in PoE, where the estimate grows by a switch, a socket for it, another power brick and one more point of failure inside the cabinet. For a private house or a small shop the built-in PoE reduces installation to a single action: pull the cable from the camera to the recorder and the channel is already live.

A pure NVR, not a hybrid — decide this before you buy

The DHI-NVR1108HS-8P-S3/H is a pure network video recorder: it accepts IP cameras over the local network only and has no BNC connector for coaxial cable at all. That is the fundamental difference from the hybrid XVR units of the same manufacturer, which handle analogue HDCVI cameras and IP cameras side by side. If coaxial cable from an older analogue system is already buried in the walls of your site, this recorder forces you to run new cable routes, and in that situation the hybrid Dahua XVR models from this same catalogue make far more sense. When the system is built from scratch, however, the pure NVR wins outright: an IP camera delivers high resolution with no degradation over a long run, and PoE removes the power question at every point. Third-party cameras connect over ONVIF and RTSP, so you are not locked to a single brand, although with Dahua cameras setup comes down to an automatic device search on the network.

Records 8 MP, displays Full HD — the model's main trade-off

The recorder accepts streams at up to 8 MP and supports the whole range below it — 5, 4 and 3 MP, 1080p and 720p — so the 2 MP cameras you already own will happily live out their service life in the same system. The HDMI and VGA outputs, however, are capped at 1920×1080, and this is the most important honest detail about the model: the 8 MP stream is written to disk in full, but on the monitor attached to the recorder you see it scaled down to Full HD. Decoding has a ceiling as well — one 8 MP channel, or two 4 MP channels, or four 1080p channels, or eight 720p channels at 30 frames per second are decoded simultaneously. In practice the eight-camera multiview is shown locally at reduced quality, and to examine a detail you expand the channel you need to full screen, at which point it plays back at its true resolution. For reviewing the archive and exporting a clip to a flash drive this is no limitation at all, because the recording on the disk stays exactly as the camera delivered it.

A disk of up to 8 TB, and how many days of archive that really buys

The chassis takes one 3.5-inch hard drive of up to 8 TB; the drive is not included and should be chosen separately, preferably from a series designed for round-the-clock video recording. Let us do the arithmetic using realistic Smart H.265+ bitrates, the codec enabled here by default: a 2 MP camera in continuous recording produces roughly 2 Mbps, a 4 MP camera about 4 Mbps and an 8 MP camera about 8 Mbps, while one megabit per second turns into roughly 11 GB over twenty-four hours. Eight 2 MP cameras running 24/7 therefore consume about 170 GB per day, and an 8 TB drive holds close to a month and a half of uninterrupted recording. Eight 4 MP cameras already mean about 350 GB per day, which is three weeks of archive on the same disk, while eight 8 MP cameras eat almost 700 GB per day and leave barely a week and a half. The incoming bandwidth is capped at 80 Mbps and eight 8 MP cameras sit right at that ceiling, so if you want both 8 MP and a month of history, either switch some channels to event-based recording or plan the system around 4 MP from the start.

Motion detection without AI: an honest word about what is missing

This is the budget Lite line and it carries no built-in video analytics: the recorder performs classic motion detection by pixel change in the frame, but it does not tell a person apart from a vehicle, an animal or a branch swaying in the wind. The consequence is predictable — rely on the recorder's own detection and notifications will pour in from cloud shadows, rain and your own dog, the owner switches them off within a week, and the system stops working as a security tool. The correct answer is simple: the intelligent filtering belongs in the camera, not in the recorder. Modern Dahua cameras with WizSense, like Hikvision models with AcuSense, run the analytics on their own processor and hand the recorder a finished "person" or "vehicle" event, which is why a plain NVR paired with smart cameras outperforms the reverse combination. If you specifically need the analytics on the recorder side — perimeter protection, SMD Plus, face detection and recognition — cross this model off the list straight away and look at the NVR2xxx-I2 series.

Network, mobile app and the physical limits of the chassis

The recorder is operated with a mouse on site or remotely over the network, and P2P cloud access comes up without a static IP address and without port forwarding on the router — scanning a QR code in the mobile app is enough. HTTP, HTTPS, TCP/IP, IPv4 and IPv6, RTSP, UDP, NTP, DHCP, DNS and P2P are supported, clients exist for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, and the two USB ports split naturally: one for the mouse, one for the flash drive you export clips to. Both video outputs, HDMI and VGA, work at the same time, so a monitor at the guard desk and a second screen in the back room can coexist without any splitter. The chassis is compact at 260×225×48 mm and 840 grams, built from a metal and plastic combination, and it sits on a shelf in the cabinet or mounts in a shallow niche next to the router. The operating range of -10 to +45 °C points plainly at a heated room: an uninsulated outdoor cabinet in winter is not the place for this unit, and the hard drive inside it will be the first thing to fail.

Where this recorder belongs and what it was built for

The ideal scenario is a private house or a country property with six to eight cameras around the perimeter, where a single device has to cover the yard, the driveway gate, the front door and the utility area. The model fits a small shop, a coffee house, a car service or a warehouse just as well: eight channels are enough for the sales floor, the till, the entrance, the loading bay and the adjoining parking area. A third typical case is an apartment block entrance or a small residents' association site, where cameras go at the door, in the lift lobby and by the waste collection point, and the recording has to survive at least a month. The model is out of place where more than eight cameras are required — the channel count in this chassis cannot be expanded and the whole recorder would have to be replaced — and equally where coaxial cable is already installed or where intelligent alarm filtering is expected from the recorder itself. One more case that is not for it is a manned security desk where an operator studies a multiview on a 4K monitor all day: there is simply no output above 1080p here.

The main step up is the Dahua DHI-NVR2108-8P-I2: also eight channels and eight PoE ports, but from the WizSense series with SMD Plus, perimeter protection and face recognition on the recorder side, a disk of up to 10 TB and a 4K HDMI output — paying extra for it makes sense when the cameras are simple and nothing else can do the analytics. The Hikvision DS-7108NI-Q1/8P(D) in this catalogue is the direct rival with eight channels and eight PoE ports in the same class, but its disk tops out at 6 TB, which means a noticeably shorter archive for the same number of cameras. The Reolink NVS8 is easier to set up and also offers eight PoE ports, yet it only shows its full hand with Reolink cameras, whereas the Dahua accepts a mixed fleet from different manufacturers over ONVIF far more calmly.
