Battery power: this camera records events, not around the clock

The Argus B430 runs on a built-in 21.6Wh rechargeable battery that tops up over USB Type-C or from a 3W solar panel, so no mains cable and no socket are needed anywhere near the mounting point. That freedom comes with one condition every buyer should understand first: a battery camera cannot physically record continuously, because it keeps the radio and the sensor asleep and wakes up on the PIR trigger only for the duration of the event. Your archive is therefore a set of 10-60 second clips rather than a continuous timeline, and anything that happens outside the PIR coverage simply never reaches the card. For a yard, a country house, a shed entrance or a fence line with a handful of events per day, that is actually easier to work with: you review ten clips instead of twenty-four hours of footage. For a till area, a shop floor or a warehouse, where an unbroken evidentiary archive matters, a battery model is the wrong tool and a wired PoE camera is the right one. Through the sunny half of the year the panel keeps the battery topped up indefinitely, but during a long overcast December you should still plan to take the camera down and charge it manually about once a month.

355 degrees of pan and 140 of tilt: one mount instead of two cameras

The motorised head covers 355 degrees horizontally and 140 degrees vertically, which means a single mounting point looks almost full circle, from the top of the fence down to the paving right underneath. Up to 64 preset positions are stored in the app, so the directions you actually care about - gate, wicket, workshop window, parking spot - are one tap away instead of a manual joystick hunt. On a small plot this replaces the two or three fixed cameras you would otherwise mount, each with its own bracket and its own cable run. The trade-off is rarely spelled out honestly: a pan-tilt camera only ever looks one way at a time, and while the lens is aimed at the gate, the opposite corner of the plot is covered by nobody. Pan-tilt therefore suits live monitoring and patrolling several points, whereas guaranteed perimeter coverage is still safer with two fixed cameras facing each other. Keep in mind too that every movement of the head is motor work and therefore battery drain, so heavy manual steering from your phone noticeably shortens the interval between charges.

5MP at 15 frames per second with a 90-degree field of view

The 1/2.7-inch sensor delivers 2880x1616 pixels, roughly 5MP, which is about twice the detail of the common 2MP cameras and enough to recognise a familiar face or tell exactly which car pulled up at the gate. The 4mm lens covers 90 degrees horizontally and 47 vertically: narrower than the usual 2.8mm optics, but the same object fills more of the frame, so details at eight to twelve metres read far more confidently. The 15fps frame rate is a direct consequence of power saving and deserves attention: a walking person looks perfectly natural, while a car passing at 40-50 km/h yields fewer usable frames for a frame-by-frame review than a 25fps wired camera would. Digital zoom in the app helps you inspect part of a recorded clip, but it adds no detail whatsoever - it only magnifies existing pixels, so it is no substitute for real optics. H.265 compression is roughly twice as economical as H.264 at comparable quality, and on a 128GB card an event-based archive of a typical yard builds up over months rather than days.

Night vision: 10 metres of infrared plus two colour spotlights

After dark the camera has two modes: silent infrared illumination from two 850nm LEDs totalling 1.2W gives a black-and-white picture out to roughly 10 metres, while two 2.4W 6500K white spotlights fire on an event and turn the frame fully colour. The difference matters when an incident has to be reconstructed: a monochrome silhouette proves somebody was there, whereas a colour frame records the shade of the jacket, the body colour of the car and the parcel in someone's hands. The limitation to plan around is the infrared range itself - 10 metres is two to three times shorter than on Reolink's wired P-series, so the far corner of a 25-30 metre plot will simply stay dark at night. The spotlights also carry a side effect that often turns out to be the main one: sudden bright light tells a night visitor plainly that he has been noticed, and a good share of such visits end right there. Light costs charge, though, and spotlights left permanently on drain the battery several times faster than event-triggered firing, so the always-on setting is best avoided on a cordless camera.

A PIR sensor backed by person, vehicle and animal recognition

The first stage of the reaction is a hardware PIR sensor with adjustable range up to 10 metres and roughly a 90-degree spread, and it alone decides whether waking the camera is worth it. The second stage is the analytics, which classifies the object as a person, a vehicle or an animal, letting you enable alerts only for the categories that matter to you. On a cordless camera that filtering is worth more than on a wired one: every false trigger from a swaying branch or a passing cat is not just a stray push notification but spent percentage points of charge and a shorter run to the next recharge. Alerts arrive by push and e-mail, while RTSP, ONVIF and Home Assistant integration mean the camera can be folded into your own smart-home setup rather than living only inside the vendor app. Remember as well that even a fast PIR needs a fraction of a second to wake the sensor, so a person crossing the very edge of the zone may only appear a metre or two in; aim the camera so that movement runs across the field of view rather than straight at the lens.

Where this camera belongs and what it is built for

The ideal case for a B430 is a spot with no power and no existing cabling: a plot with a house still under renovation, a country cottage, a garage in a co-op block, the gable end of an outbuilding, a fence deep in the garden or a parking space by the gate. The metal housing measures 98 by 122mm and weighs 477g, so an ordinary bracket holds it, and IP64 protection covers rain and dust but not pressurised jets, which means a pressure washer should never be aimed directly at it. The -10 to +55C operating range is honestly narrower than on wired models: at -20C a lithium battery loses capacity and the camera falls outside its rated conditions, so genuinely frosty weeks call for manual charging or a sheltered position under an eave. Indoors it works too, but its autonomy is wasted there - a socket is usually nearby, and a wired camera will give you continuous recording in the same budget. Where running a cable costs more than the camera itself, however, the cordless option wins by a wide margin.

How it compares with the neighbouring Reolink models in this catalogue

Its closest relatives here are the Argus B330 and B340: the same 5MP sensor and the same battery logic, but with a fixed 2.8mm lens and no moving head, in a cube and a bullet body respectively. If you need to watch one specific spot - a wicket gate, a garage door, a front entrance - the fixed B330 or B340 does the job more simply and for less, and paying extra for the B430 head only makes sense when there are several points to watch. The Argus B310 is the junior model of the line with a 3MP sensor: fine for recognising a face a few metres away, no longer enough to read detail at ten or twelve metres. If the site has no internet either, look at the Go G430 instead - the same cordless pan-tilt concept but with an LTE modem that works off its own SIM without any Wi-Fi nearby, which is decisive for a cottage with no router. And if mains power is available after all and you need a continuous archive, the wired P324 or P334 with PoE is the correct answer: they record 24/7, reach 30 metres with infrared and never need charging, which for a permanent installation on an occupied house is simply the better engineering choice.
