Where this camera belongs and what it actually solves

The PS8D is an eyeball-style dome on a short base: it mounts under a soffit, on a garage wall, above a shop entrance or on a warehouse ceiling, looking down at an angle instead of sticking out on a long arm. Its natural habitat is a house yard or porch, a gate, a small retail floor, a car wash or service bay, an office corridor, an apartment building entrance — scenes with a working distance of up to 10-15 metres. Mounted at 2.5-3 metres, the 96° field of view covers a typical 8-10 metre wide yard end to end, and a person walking 5-7 metres away is captured full height with a recognisable face and clothing. Where it is the wrong tool: reading licence plates at an entrance 20-25 metres away, or covering a long perimeter — those jobs need narrower optics and 50-metre illumination, while a 2.8 mm lens turns a distant car into a handful of pixels. One practical constraint to settle before buying: this is a wired PoE model with no Wi-Fi, so the site must allow a twisted-pair run from the switch or recorder to the mounting point.

Three megapixels and a 96° angle: what the frame really shows

The 3 MP sensor produces a 2304×1296 image, roughly 50% more pixels than the familiar 2 MP cameras, and those extra pixels are spent exactly where they matter — on small details you need when reviewing footage after the fact. The difference shows up not on a live monitor but when you zoom into a fragment: where 2 MP leaves a blurred smear instead of a face or a logo on a jacket, 3 MP still keeps recognisable features. Thirty frames per second is enough that a person running past or a car moving at yard speed does not smear between frames when you step through the recording. The honest compromise is the 1/3" sensor: against strong backlight, with a bright window or the sun behind the subject, cameras with a larger sensor and wider WDR will clearly do better, so pointing the PS8D straight at a light source is a mistake.

Four night modes: infrared to 30 metres, or a colour picture

Instead of one night mode the camera offers four: classic infrared, full colour with the built-in spotlight, a smart mode, and illumination switched off entirely. In infrared the reach is 30 metres and the light itself is invisible to the eye — the camera does not announce itself and does not annoy neighbours, but the footage stays black and white. In full-colour mode the white light comes on and the night recording keeps colour: instead of a silhouette in a dark jacket you see that the jacket is blue and the car is white, and those are the details that matter when the clip has to be shown to someone. Smart mode sits between the two — invisible infrared runs permanently and the white light fires only when the analytics has actually seen a person or a vehicle. A practical note for residential sites: white light aimed at a neighbour's window or towards the road is far more irritating than it seems at installation time, so pick the night mode after mounting, judging by the real picture.

Imou SENSE: telling a person and a car from a branch or a cat

The PS8D runs Imou SENSE analytics, which classifies what it sees and separately recognises people and vehicles rather than simply registering a change of pixels. That is the real gap between this camera and a motion-only model: without classification the system alerts on every branch in the wind, every cloud shadow, the cat on the fence and the rain caught in the illumination beam. The outcome is always the same — after a week the owner mutes notifications, and a security device quietly degrades into an archive that nobody looks at until something has already happened. With classification you can leave alerts on around the clock: push and e-mail arrive when a person approaches the house, not when the dog crosses the yard. The camera also supports sound-triggered alarms through its built-in microphone, so breaking glass or shouting can become an event as well — though there is no speaker here, so talking back through the camera is not possible.

Red-and-blue warning lights: stopping the event, not just filming it

Besides the spotlight the camera carries red-and-blue warning lights — the same visual code as a police car — and they fire on an analytics event rather than on any movement. The point is to move the camera from passive witness to active barrier: most opportunistic intrusions into private property stop at the moment the intruder realises he has been seen and something is already reacting. In a small shop the effect works in daylight too — flashing beside a shelf of small goods visibly reduces the number of attempts to pocket something. It should not be oversold: a prepared burglary will not be stopped by a light, and no warning strobe replaces an alarm system with a monitoring contract. Realistically it is a tool against casual and impulsive situations, and it has a side benefit — it lights up the scene at the very moment of the event, which improves the recording itself.

PoE 802.3af power, under 6 W, IP67 housing

The camera runs either on PoE 802.3af or on a separate 12 V supply, and the first option is usually the more practical: a single twisted-pair cable carries both power and data, so no socket and no adapter are needed at the mounting point. Consumption below 6 W means eight such cameras fit into roughly 48 W, so even an inexpensive eight-port PoE switch with a 60-65 W budget covers them with headroom to spare. The plastic housing weighs 254 g at 109.9×109.9×95.7 mm, so an ordinary wall or ceiling plug is enough — no reinforced base and no special bracket. IP67 means complete dust protection and survival of short immersion in water, which is more than sufficient for an outdoor position exposed to wind-driven rain. The -30 to +60 °C range covers a Ukrainian winter, but the connector and the cable joint still belong inside a sealed box: those points, not the camera itself, are what usually fails in January.
