Description Hikvision DS-2CD2421G0-I

A cube body with a PIR sensor, not a shrunken outdoor camera

The DS-2CD2421G0-I belongs to a different species than the bullet and turret cameras elsewhere in this catalogue: a 102.9 × 65.2 × 32.6 mm cube weighing roughly 120 grams that sits on a shelf or dresser, or goes on a wall with a single small bracket. What really sets it apart is the built-in passive infrared sensor with a 10-metre range and a 90° horizontal by 80° vertical detection field, which responds to the heat a human body radiates rather than to pixels changing in the frame. Indoors that distinction pays off daily, because a television reflection, headlights sweeping past a window or a curtain swaying in a draught all alter the image without producing any heat signature, so the PIR filters out a large share of the false triggers that plague plain software motion detection. The limitations deserve equal billing: PIR coverage stops at about ten metres and barely penetrates glass, so aiming this camera through a window or hiding it behind a glass cabinet door defeats the purpose. The light plastic housing carries one more caveat — the camera is easy to nudge or turn by hand, so for any position a stranger could reach, a turret model on a rigid mount is the safer choice.

Two megapixels, a 107° field of view and ten metres of IR

A 1/2.7" progressive scan CMOS sensor delivering 1920 × 1080 pairs with a 2.8 mm F2.0 lens to produce 107° horizontally, 57° vertically and 126° diagonally, which is enough to swallow a typical 16-20 m² room whole when the camera sits in a corner. Resolution is best judged not in megapixels but in pixels per metre of scene width: with a field this wide, detail around the four-metre mark is still sufficient to identify someone you know, at eight or nine metres you will read clothing, build and direction of travel, and beyond that you get a silhouette that proves presence but not identity. That is precisely why 2 MP indoors is a reasoned choice rather than a corner cut — the working distances are short, and extra pixels would mostly be spent photographing the ceiling and the floor. The 850 nm infrared illuminator reaches up to ten metres, which inside four walls is usually more than the distance to the opposite wall anyway. Minimum illumination of 0.028 lux in colour means a night light or a street lamp outside the window keeps the picture in colour, and only in genuine darkness does the camera switch to monochrome IR.

The G0 marking: this camera cannot tell a person from a cat

In Hikvision's naming scheme the generation code after the base index identifies the processing platform, and G0 is the oldest tier with no on-board analytics, unlike the G2 and G3 lines where AcuSense classifies people and vehicles. You can see the consequence in the datasheet's event list: the DS-2CD2421G0-I offers motion detection, video tampering alarm and system exceptions such as a dropped network link or an IP conflict, and not a single line about human detection, vehicle detection or line crossing. For the owner this translates into something very concrete — the camera alerts on any change in the frame, on the cat jumping onto the sofa, on the robot vacuum setting off, on a patch of sunlight creeping across the floor. Within a week or two the stream of notifications becomes background noise, the owner switches push alerts off in the app, and the security function quietly disappears, leaving a recorder that archives footage but warns nobody about anything. The PIR sensor partially rescues the situation here: bind recording and alerts to PIR events rather than to software motion detection and false alarms drop several-fold, although the camera still will not distinguish the cat from a burglar.

Two-way audio with the microphone and speaker already inside

Where most budget cameras offer a microphone at best, this one carries a full duplex path: one audio input from the built-in microphone and one output through the built-in speaker, with no external hardware and no extra cabling to plan. The G.711, G.722.1, G.726, MP2L2 and PCM codecs at 8 or 16 kHz sampling cover everything Hik-Connect, iVMS-4200 and the vast majority of recorders expect, and the environmental noise filter recovers some intelligibility in a room with a television running. The scenarios people actually buy this for repeat day after day: telling a child you are on your way home, stopping the dog from shredding the sofa, checking in on an elderly relative without making them pick up a phone, or answering a courier when the camera watches the front door from inside. Events arrive as push notifications and e-mail, and the linkage options include recording to the card, upload to FTP or NAS, an audible warning and notification to a surveillance centre. Keep one physical limit in mind: the speaker is small, sized for a room rather than for shouting over machinery or a crowded shop floor.

Power, temperature and why this camera must never go outside

The operating window runs from -10 to +40 °C at up to 95% non-condensing humidity, and the housing carries no ingress protection rating at all — this is an indoor device without qualification. A balcony, an entrance lobby or an unheated garage look like acceptable compromises until January, when the camera either refuses to start after a power cut or gathers condensation on the optics that slowly destroys the sensor; for those positions the catalogue offers outdoor models rated IP67 and -30…+60 °C. Power is 12 V DC through a standard 5.5 mm barrel connector at roughly 5 W, and the Hikvision datasheet also lists PoE 802.3af Class 3 with a 6 W maximum for the variant without the W suffix, whereas the product card here quotes the adapter only — so if the whole design hangs on PoE, confirm the batch revision with our manager first. The difference is practical rather than academic: power over the network cable lets you mount the camera where no socket exists and put it behind the same UPS as the switch. There is no Wi-Fi in this modification whatsoever, since the wireless module belongs to the W versions, so plan a wired run to the 10/100 RJ45 port.

Storage: a 256 GB card, ANR and recording to network shares

The microSD slot accepts SDHC and SDXC cards up to 256 GB, and for a single 2 MP stream encoded in H.265+ that is a genuine multi-week archive rather than an emergency buffer, with the exact depth following the bit rate you set anywhere between 32 Kbps and 8 Mbps. ANR deserves particular attention: when the link to the recorder breaks, the camera keeps writing to its own card and, once the network returns, automatically backfills the missing segment into the main archive, so there is no hole in the footage at exactly the moment someone pulled a cable. Beyond the card, the camera records to NAS volumes over NFS and SMB/CIFS, which is convenient when a file server already exists in the house and buying a dedicated recorder for one camera makes little sense. Third-party integration runs through ONVIF Profile S and Profile G, ISAPI and the SDK, so the camera attaches happily to universal VMS platforms and Home Assistant as well as to Hikvision recorders. One caveat to note in advance: Profile T is absent, which in some third-party systems restricts event handling and stream control, so the most predictable results still come from pairing it with a recorder of the same brand.

Where this camera belongs and what it is actually for

The most direct use case is a child's room or an elderly relative's room, where the point is less about evidence for the police and more about glancing in quickly and speaking up immediately — the combination of PIR, duplex audio and a small body exists for exactly that. The second familiar scenario is a flat or house where the camera watches the front door from inside along with the hallway: 107° covers an entrance area completely, and ten metres of illumination is generous for any corridor. The third is a small office, a consulting room or a shop's back room, where you want eyes on the safe, the till or the stockroom door and the occasional ability to address staff by voice. Where it emphatically does not belong: yards, gate areas, fences, façades and unheated garages — anything involving outdoor air is ruled out by the temperature range and the lack of a sealed housing. It is also the wrong purchase wherever genuine security logic is required, because without object classification the device remains an observation tool rather than an alarm component.

How it compares with neighbouring models in this catalogue

The sharpest comparison is the Dahua DH-C4K-P, effectively the same money as the asked here: it offers 4 megapixels instead of 2, human and vehicle detection, Wi-Fi as well as Ethernet, and PoE — on paper Dahua wins, and if you are not tied to the Hikvision ecosystem the honest advice is to look in that direction first. Two arguments still hold for the DS-2CD2421G0-I: the PIR sensor, which the C4K-P does not have, and seamless behaviour with Hikvision recorders and the Hik-Connect app if the rest of the site already runs on that brand. If what you need is the cheapest possible home camera and the manufacturer's cloud app is acceptable, the Dahua DH-C5A gives 5 MP and analytics for half the price, while the Imou Ranger 2 gen 2 covers the baby-monitor job on a minimal budget. Inside the Hikvision range the logic runs like this: the DS-2CD1321G0-I is cheaper and outdoor-rated with IP67 and -30…+60 °C, but has no PIR, no audio and no card slot; the DS-2CD1327G2H-LIUF adds human and vehicle recognition plus colour night video to a weatherproof body; and if a cube for indoor use at 4 MP is what you want, the catalogue lists the DS-2CD2443G2-I. The verdict without varnish: this model earns its place when you specifically need PIR and two-way audio inside a Hikvision system, because on pure price per megapixel and on analytics it loses to its neighbours.

If you are unsure whether one indoor camera is enough or whether an outdoor position should be planned from the start, tell us which rooms need covering and whether a recorder is already installed, and we will put together a set without unnecessary spending.
