8 MP on a 1/2.8″ sensor: why the pixel reserve matters and where it costs frames

The progressive-scan sensor outputs 3840×2160, roughly four times the pixel count of an ordinary Full HD camera, and that reserve is what lets you zoom into a recorded frame afterwards and make out a detail nobody noticed in the live view. In practice a single 8 MP camera above a driveway often replaces two 2 MP units: you cover the wide general view and crop the area you need digitally, without paying for a second recorder channel. There is a catch that listings usually skip: the full 3840×2160 stream runs at 20 frames per second, and the advertised 25 fps become available at 3200×1800 and below. For watching a yard or a courtyard 20 frames are perfectly enough, but if you intend to step through fast motion frame by frame — a car passing at 40-50 km/h — it makes sense to switch the camera to 3200×1800 and trade peak resolution for a smoother stream. And the sensor's own compromise: packing 8 MP onto a physically small 1/2.8″ chip means small pixels, so in deep dusk this model shows more noise than 4 MP cameras built around a 1/1.8″ sensor — daylight favours resolution, darkness favours light sensitivity.

Smart Hybrid Light: forty metres of IR plus white light that fires on an event

The housing carries both 850 nm infrared LEDs and white LEDs, and the camera decides for itself which to use: in normal night mode the invisible IR illuminator works out to an effective 40 metres, and the moment analytics recognises a person or a vehicle the white light joins in and the frame turns full colour. The difference between a monochrome and a colour recording is not cosmetic: on an IR frame you see a silhouette in a light jacket, on a colour one you see that the jacket is red and the car a silver estate — exactly the markers that matter when the footage has to be shown to someone. Minimum illumination is rated at 0.005 lux in colour at an F1.6 aperture and 0 lux with IR engaged, so the camera does not go blind on a street with no lamp at all. Four supplemental lighting modes are provided, so the hybrid behaviour can also be switched off and IR left alone — useful where a burst of white light would hit the neighbours' windows or your own bedroom. Honestly about the limit: 40 metres is a mid-range figure rather than a record one; for a long driveway or the far end of a seventy-metre plot the DS-2CD2T83G2-4LI in this same catalogue, with its 80-metre illuminator, is the more sensible choice.

AcuSense: the camera separates people from vehicles before it sends an alert

The G2 in the model name is not a board revision but the presence of AcuSense — deep-learning object classification performed inside the camera itself, with no server and no cloud service involved. You feel the result in the first week: motion detection, line crossing, intrusion, region entrance and region exit fire only on a human or a vehicle, while a branch swaying in the wind, heavy rain or a cloud shadow produce no events at all. This is the parameter that decides whether the system works at all: cameras without AI send dozens of night-time messages on any pixel change, the owner mutes notifications within a week, and the security function disappears with them. Beyond the basics there is unattended-baggage and object-removal detection, face detection and a tamper alarm — on a small warehouse or shop floor those are working tools rather than a line in a table. One exclusion deserves a plain statement: this model has no separate animal classification, so your own large dog will register as ordinary motion — if a dog lives in the yard, rely on a line-crossing zone along the fence rather than on whole-frame motion detection.

The 2.8 mm lens and real distances: who you will identify and who you will merely spot

The fixed 2.8 mm lens with an F1.6 aperture covers 108° horizontally, 59° vertically and 127° diagonally — a single such angle takes in a typical private yard completely, with no blind sectors at the edges. Hikvision's official DORI figures for this focal length read: detect 84 metres, observe 33 metres, recognise 16 metres, identify 8 metres. Read that literally: at eighty metres you will see that somebody is walking, at thirty you can say it is a person in dark clothing carrying a bag, at sixteen you can reliably tell an acquaintance from a stranger, and for footage good enough to identify a face the point of passage should be brought closer than eight metres. Hence the practical verdict on licence plates: a wide 2.8 mm lens is not meant to read them at 20-25 metres, and no amount of resolution fixes that — geometry beats megapixels. If plates matter, the same model is taken in the 4 mm version (88° horizontal, recognition out to 23 metres) or 6 mm (54°, out to 35 metres), while the wide-angle unit stays on general area coverage.

120 dB WDR, HLC and a Ukrainian winter: when the camera is not blinded

True 120 dB WDR earns its keep wherever one frame contains both darkness and bright light — the classic case of a camera aimed at a gate against the sun, or at an entrance seen from a sunlit street. Without WDR such a frame falls apart: either the face of a person in the vestibule becomes a black blob, or the street beyond the door blows out and loses every detail. There is also HLC, which suppresses bright sources so that the headlights of a car pulling in at night do not turn half the frame into white canvas, plus BLC and 3D DNR noise reduction that removes the grain from night recordings and incidentally saves disk space. The body is all metal, rated IP67, and runs from -30 to +60 °C at up to 95% humidity without condensation — that means genuine operation in January rather than a formality in the datasheet, because budget cameras with a -10 °C lower limit frequently refuse to boot after a power cut on a frosty night. Up to eight polygonal privacy masks can be configured as well, which helps when a neighbour's window inevitably falls inside the field of view and that area has to be covered properly.

Power, mounting and archive: what to budget alongside the camera itself

The camera runs either from 802.3af PoE (class 3, up to 7.5 W) or from 12 V DC through a 5.5 mm coaxial connector with reverse-polarity protection, drawing roughly 0.5 A. That 7.5 W figure matters when you size the installation: eight such cameras on one switch amount to about 60 W of useful load, so a budget PoE switch with a 60-65 W total budget will sit right at its ceiling and a model with headroom is the safer buy. The bullet housing measures 74.4 mm across and 176.3 mm long and weighs 515 g — the supplied bracket is enough without reinforcement, though the long barrel makes the camera clearly visible from the street, which is simultaneously an advantage (it deters) and a drawback (its position is known). The archive can live locally: the microSD slot takes cards up to 512 GB, and ANR back-fills the recorder with whatever gap appeared while the network was down, a small feature that saves the day on sites with unreliable mains. Recording straight to a NAS over NFS or SMB/CIFS is supported too, along with H.265+ compression and a 16 Mbit/s bitrate ceiling; plan on an 8 MP channel eating roughly twice the storage of a 2 MP one, so a 4 TB disk with three such cameras holds about two weeks of continuous recording.

Where this camera belongs and the jobs it was actually built for

The model is at its best on the outer perimeter of a house, on a driveway, on the facade of a small shop or warehouse and over an office car park — anywhere you need a wide general view with the option of extracting a detail from it later. The typical working arrangement: the camera looks along the fence, a line-crossing zone is drawn on the property boundary, people and vehicles raise events and trigger the white light, and the rest of the frame stays as a background you can inspect with digital zoom after the fact. In a warehouse eight megapixels work nicely on one aisle between racks, and on a shop floor on the till area, since they supply enough pixels for a face and a pair of hands at the same time. Where it is out of place: in a narrow corridor, stairwell or vestibule, where 108° turn into a surplus view of the walls and a 40-metre illuminator bounces off the nearest surface and washes the frame out — a dome model with illumination up to 30 metres suits that far better. Nor should you expect it to read plates at a distant gate: the correct scheme for a long plot is this camera for the general view plus a second one with narrower optics aimed squarely at the entrance.

How it differs from the neighbouring Hikvision models in this catalogue

The closest relative is the DS-2CD2063G2-LI: identical metal housing, the same 40-metre hybrid illuminator, the same AcuSense and the same power draw, but 6 MP on a 1/2.4″ sensor instead of 8 MP; if you need clean night footage more than fine detail, the junior model actually looks the stronger buy, and paying up for the eighth megapixel is justified when you genuinely plan to enlarge fragments of the recording. The DS-2CD2T83G2-4LI is also 8 MP but pairs an 80-metre illuminator with a narrower 102° angle: the better answer for a long driveway or a large perimeter, yet by the catalogue data it runs on 12 V only with no PoE and carries a 12-month warranty against 24 months here, two reasons to think twice before putting it on an ordinary yard. The DS-2CD2T47G3-LIY from the same catalogue follows a different philosophy: only 4 MP, but a 1/1.8″ sensor and an F1.0 ColorVu aperture, which means colour imaging where our model has already fallen back to monochrome — take it if night work is the main task, and take the 2083G2-LI if daytime detail is. And if the site only needs the bare fact of movement without human recognition, the catalogue holds the G0-generation DS-2CD1021G0-I and DS-2CD1141G0-I: a markedly more affordable alternative, but without AcuSense and without white light, that is, without the very things that make a system work on alerts instead of only on archive review.
