Full-color with warm white light: colour footage at night instead of a grey silhouette

The LED suffix in the model name is the whole point of this camera: instead of the usual infrared diodes it carries a single powerful warm-white LED, so at night it never drops into black-and-white but keeps recording in colour. That is the difference between "a man in a dark jacket" and "a man in a navy jacket with a red backpack", and the second description is the one that is actually useful when the footage has to be shown to somebody. Two things make it work: an F1.6 lens that lets through a lot of light and a sensor rated down to 0.005 lux, so colours hold together instead of dissolving into noise while the LED only tops up the area directly in front of the camera. There is a trade-off worth knowing before you buy: white light is visible to everyone, so the camera announces its own position and doubles as a small outdoor lamp — mount it under a bedroom window or in a nursery and it will start to annoy within a week. Smart Illumination keeps the diode from running at full power all night long, but you cannot make the light invisible the way an IR camera does; that is how Full-color works rather than a flaw of a particular unit.

2 MP, a 2.8 mm lens and 20 metres of light: what really lands in the frame

The 1/2.8" sensor outputs 1920 × 1080 at 25 fps — plain Full HD, with no spare pixels to zoom into when you go back through the archive. A 2.8 mm lens with a 106° horizontal field of view covers an entire room, a porch or a small yard with one unit, but those two megapixels are stretched across that whole wide scene, so detail falls away with distance much faster than buyers expect. Dahua publishes DORI figures for this optic and they are worth reading literally: detecting that a person is present works up to 43.9 m, observing what they are doing up to 17.5 m, recognising someone you already know up to 8.8 m, and identifying a stranger by face only up to 4.4 m. In practice that means usable identification happens within four or five metres of the lens — right at a doorway, a till or a gate, not across the far end of a plot. Mind the illumination range as well: with the 2.8 mm lens it is about 20 metres, while the 30 metres quoted in the datasheet belongs to the 3.6 mm variant, because a wider angle always costs you part of the night-time reach.

Motion detection only, no AI: the limitation that shapes daily use

In the specification sheet the lines for human, vehicle and animal detection are simply empty — this camera does classic pixel-change motion detection across four rectangular zones and nothing more. Day to day that means an alert looks identical whether it was triggered by someone opening the gate, a cat crossing the path, a branch moving in the wind, or an insect flying through the warm light right in front of the lens, and insects are in fact the number one source of false alarms on Full-color cameras. The sequence that follows is always the same: for a few days the owner reads the notifications, within a week there are dozens per night, then the notifications get switched off, and the system quietly stops being a security system and becomes an archive you consult after the fact. There are two honest ways around it — shrink the detection zone in the settings to the part of the frame that genuinely matters, such as the gate leaf, the porch step or the gap between buildings, or hand the analytics to a recorder that has them, for example the NVR2xxx-I2 models elsewhere in this catalogue. If it is essential that the camera itself tells a person from an animal, this is the wrong model and you should look at the series 2 units in the same housing, which carry the analytics on board.

No memory card slot: the archive exists only inside the recorder

Dahua's Entry series leaves out the microSD slot on this model, so the camera keeps no footage of its own and functions purely as a stream source for a recorder or a server. As long as the recorder runs and the cable is intact the recording continues; the second the switch loses power or somebody cuts the twisted pair, recording stops and that gap in the archive can never be filled in. A camera with a card would keep writing locally through the outage and hand over the missing fragment once the link returns, and that capability is exactly what you pay extra for in the series 2 models with a 256 GB slot. The firmware does offer FTP upload as partial insurance, which helps when there is always-available storage on the network, but it is not a true local buffer and should not be treated as one. Plan the system accordingly: a recorder is mandatory here, and a modest UPS covering the router, the switch and the recorder turns a night-time power cut from a hole in the archive into a minor inconvenience.

12 V or PoE power, IP67 and an operating range starting at -40 °C

The camera runs either from a separate 12 V adapter or over PoE 802.3af on the same cable that carries the video, and the second option is almost always the practical one: no mains socket is needed at the mounting point and the whole installation can be backed up by a single UPS next to the recorder. Consumption is modest — around 2 W at idle and up to 5.3 W over PoE with the LED on, while the product specification lists 4.8 W at roughly 0.4 A — so a typical eight-port PoE switch with a 60-65 W budget carries eight of these cameras comfortably, even on a winter night when every illuminator is lit. IP67 is more than shorthand for "survives rain": the enclosure is tested for thirty minutes under a metre of water, so driving rain, icing and a hose aimed at the façade are all within its tolerance. The -40 °C to +60 °C range is a working figure rather than marketing copy, because cheap cameras rated only to -10 °C frequently refuse to boot in January after a power cut until their own electronics warm them up. The housing combines a metal core with plastic covers, weighs 240 g and measures 109 × 85.5 mm, which means ordinary wall plugs in concrete, brick or timber hold it without any reinforcement.

Where this camera belongs — and where choosing it is a mistake

The eye-ball form factor is a sphere seated in a fixed base: it sits flush against a ceiling or a soffit, is aimed by rotating the ball itself, and has no long bracket for an intruder to twist out of position by hand. Its natural places are a porch and entrance area, a small yard, the corridor or sales floor of a little shop, a till point, a stairwell, or a storeroom of a few dozen square metres — anywhere the distances are short and the colour of a jacket or the features of a face actually matter. In an entrance area the warm LED earns its keep twice over, lighting the scene for the camera and lighting the porch for people, which in many installations replaces a separate motion-sensor lamp altogether. Where it does not belong: a long perimeter, a vehicle gate where number plates need reading, and any task beyond roughly ten metres, because a 106° field of view combined with 2 MP will not produce legible detail no matter how far you zoom in afterwards. Do not install it behind glass either — the warm diode reflects off the pane straight back into the lens and the night image turns into a milky haze, so for window surveillance you either move the camera outside or disable the light and rely on street lighting.

How it differs from the neighbouring Dahua models in this catalogue
