Description Dahua HDW1230T1-ZS-S5

What the ZS suffix actually buys you

Every character in a Dahua part number means something, and ZS is the reason this camera exists as a separate model: Z stands for a motorised varifocal lens covering 2.8-12 mm, S for the memory card slot, HDW for the eye-ball dome body, and 1230 places it in the entry-level 2 MP range. The practical value of a motorised lens is that you set the field of view from your phone or from the recorder interface after the camera is already mounted four metres up, instead of climbing back with a ladder and a screwdriver. The same Dahua DH-IPC-HDW1230T1 with a fixed 2.8 mm lens costs less in this catalogue, so remote zoom costs roughly extra per point. That money pays for itself wherever the frame has to be found by trial and error - a long yard, a driveway between buildings, a shop floor with shelving - and returns nothing where the scene is obvious and will never change. So the honest question before buying is whether you already know exactly what must be in frame, or you will be working that out after installation.

From 101 to 33.5 degrees: how the frame changes

At the wide end the lens covers 101 degrees horizontally, which is enough for one camera to take in a private yard together with the gate and part of the facade. At the long end the angle narrows to 33.5 degrees and the camera becomes a narrow barrel aimed at a single point: the gate, the till, the warehouse door. The official DORI figures describe the difference more honestly than any marketing copy: at 2.8 mm the camera detects a person up to 48 m, observes to 19 m, recognises to 10 m and identifies a face to 5 m, while at 12 mm the same numbers stretch to 131, 52, 26 and 13 metres. Physically it is one camera, but wide it is an overview device and long it is an identification device, and the two roles cannot be filled at the same moment. The most common setup mistake happens exactly here: the owner picks the widest possible frame so that everything is visible, then wonders why a person at 20 metres can only be identified by their jacket.

Night vision: 40 metres of infrared, in black and white

Two infrared LEDs provide a rated 40 metres of illumination with automatic intensity control that adapts to target distance, which avoids the classic cheap-camera failure where anyone close to the lens turns into a white blob. Minimum illumination of 0.005 lux at F1.5 keeps the image in colour through dusk and under a weak street lamp, and only in full darkness does the IR cut filter switch and the picture turn monochrome. That is the hard limit of this model: there is no -IL suffix, therefore no white light and no colour night mode, so a night recording shows a silhouette in a light jacket but never tells you the jacket was red. The second limit is DWDR instead of true hardware wide dynamic range, so against strong backlight - a gate facing the setting sun, a doorway from a dark warehouse into daylight - faces will sink into shadow. If colour at night or difficult lighting genuinely matter on your site, it is more honest to look at the 2xxx series with the -IL suffix than to chase the result through settings.

Motion detection only, and what that means day to day

The Dahua 1xxx line has neither WizSense nor SMD Plus, which is the single most important thing to understand here: the camera registers pixel changes inside four rectangular zones, but it has no idea whether the change is a person, a car, a cat or a branch moving in the wind. The outcome is the same on every site: for two or three days the owner reads the alerts with interest, then rain in the IR beam produces forty of them a night, the notifications get switched off, and the system stops being security and becomes a plain recorder. There are two ways around it - either restrict the detection zone to a narrow strip by the gate and raise the threshold, or move the analytics to the recorder, for example the Dahua DHI-NVR2104-P-I2, which classifies people and vehicles at NVR level even from simple cameras. The second route costs more than the camera itself, so it only makes sense when several cameras share that recorder anyway. If what you need is a camera that tells a human from an animal by itself, this model should honestly be crossed off the list.

Where it belongs and where it does not

The eye-ball housing is made for a wall or ceiling under an eave, canopy or porch roof: the ball in the base rotates on three axes, so the camera can be aimed almost anywhere without buying a separate bracket. Good scenarios are a covered entrance, an inner courtyard, a retail floor, an office corridor, or a warehouse with tall racking, where the zoom lets you choose between watching the whole aisle and covering one specific shelf. Indoors it behaves well too: 40 metres of illumination is excessive for a room, but the automatic IR control dims the LEDs so nothing washes out. The weak scenarios deserve to be named just as plainly: an open perimeter with tall grass and trees, where the lack of AI filtering will bury you in false alerts; a driveway where number plates must be read in colour at night; and any spot within arm's reach, which is what the vandal-resistant HDBW domes with metal covers are for. On a fully exposed wall the IP67 rating keeps it alive, but the front glass collects rain streaks faster and you will be cleaning it more often.

Power, mounting and archive: what to budget for

The camera runs from 12 V DC or from PoE 802.3af, drawing up to 5 W from an adapter and up to 6.4 W over the network cable, the difference being cable loss. At system level that means eight of these cameras fit comfortably on an ordinary PoE switch with a 60-65 W budget, and there is no reason to pay extra for an 802.3at model. The -30 to +60 degree range and IP67 sealing cover a Ukrainian winter and a summer downpour, while the card slot takes microSD up to 256 GB. Treat that card strictly as a fallback for network outages: 256 GB of 2 MP H.265 video is roughly a week of continuous recording, and flash wears out, so the main archive belongs on a recorder or NAS. The integration set is standard Dahua - ONVIF, RTSP, FTP, CGI and P2P - so the camera joins a third-party NVR or a video analytics platform, while the DMSS app gives remote viewing without a static IP address.

How it compares with its neighbours in this catalogue

Its closest relative is the DH-IPC-HFW1230T1-ZS-S5: identical electronics and the same 2.8-12 mm zoom, but in a bullet body with its own sun shield and 50 metres of IR instead of 40; the extra earns its keep on an exposed wall or a pole, while under an eave the eye-ball is smaller and less conspicuous. If the angle at your point is obvious and will not change, the DH-IPC-HDW1230T1 is the same camera with a fixed 2.8 mm lens, and recommending it saves you per position. The most interesting in-house comparison is the DH-IPC-HDW2249T-S-IL: the 2xxx series with an -IL suffix, meaning colour images at night plus human and vehicle classification, and cheaper - it loses only on optics, with a fixed 2.8 mm lens and 30 metres of illumination. The choice between the two is literally zoom versus AI with a colour night, and for a private yard the second usually delivers more. If you want both, the reference point is the DH-IPC-HDW2449TM-S-IL: 4 MP, -IL and analytics for nearly the same money, though again with a fixed angle.

Tell us the distance to the target and the width of the area you need to see, and we will advise whether a fixed lens is enough or the motorised zoom genuinely pays off here.
