5 MP and a 90° field of view: what actually fits in the frame

Indoors that difference is practical rather than theoretical: you can zoom into a recording after the event and see what someone picked up from a shelf or where the keys were put down, instead of guessing from a blur. The 2.8 mm lens with an F2.0 aperture covers 90° horizontally and 106° diagonally, which is exactly the angle needed to cover a room of about 4×5 metres from one corner with no blind wedges along the walls. The main stream runs at up to 25 frames per second, so fast movement — a child running past, a hand reaching into a drawer — stays readable when you step through the footage frame by frame. Keep the limit in mind as well: 90° is a room angle rather than a retail-floor angle, and digital zoom never adds detail that the sensor did not capture, it only crops into the same 5 MP image.

Night indoors: IR up to 10 metres and a black-and-white picture

The C5A carries a single infrared LED with an officially stated illumination distance of up to 10 metres. Next to outdoor cameras rated for 30-50 metres that figure looks modest, but for a room it is honest and sufficient: 10 metres cover the diagonal of a typical living space with room to spare. A mechanical IR-cut filter handles the day/night switch, so once the lights go out the camera moves to black and white and keeps seeing at zero lux — in complete darkness, with no residual light at all. Set your expectations accordingly: there is no white light in this model, so a night recording will not tell you the colour of a jacket or a bag; you get a silhouette and facial features if the person is within a few metres. An electronic shutter down to 1/100,000 s and digital WDR help in mixed light, for example when the camera faces a window and afternoon sun burns out half the frame. If colour footage at night is a hard requirement, look at models with white or hybrid illumination — in this catalogue those are the wired Dahua cameras carrying the -IL suffix.

Human detection runs inside the camera instead of alerting on every movement

The camera performs AI human detection on board: the analytics separate a person entering the scene from an ordinary change of pixels and push the notification only for the former. The value is in the filtering rather than in the recognition itself — a curtain moving under the air conditioner, a cat crossing the sofa, a patch of sunlight sliding across the floor will all trigger a plain motion-detection camera, and after a week the owner simply switches notifications off. For the Cube series the manufacturer also declares pet detection, which works the other way round: events involving a dog or a cat can be reviewed as a separate feed instead of being mixed into the alarm stream. There is also an abnormal sound alarm, which reacts to a sharp noise — breaking glass, a shout, a heavy impact — even when the source is outside the frame, and in a flat that matters because half of what happens takes place in the next room. One thing the official specification does not list is vehicle classification: this is an indoor camera, and expecting the human-versus-vehicle logic of the outdoor WizSense models from it would be wrong.

Two-way talk, one-click privacy mode and a magnetic base

Both a microphone and a speaker are built in, so the camera doubles as an intercom inside the flat: through the DMSS app you can not only hear what is going on but answer — tell a child you are on your way, or call the dog off the sofa. Audio is encoded with G.711a, a deliberately narrow-band codec, which is the right trade-off for a Wi-Fi camera: speech stays intelligible while the uplink is not loaded. One function the outdoor models do not have is one-click privacy mode: when you are home, recording and streaming stop, and that single switch removes the main psychological objection to a camera in a living room. The base is magnetic, so the camera can sit on a shelf, move to a fridge door or a steel bracket in seconds, while 0-360° pan and -10° to +70° tilt let you aim it precisely without tools. Initial setup runs over Bluetooth pairing in the app, so joining the camera to Wi-Fi needs no cable and none of the QR-code rituals with retyped passwords.

2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and 5 V power: the weak point to plan around

The camera connects wirelessly only, on the 2.4 GHz band (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) — there is no RJ-45 socket on it, and that is the first thing to verify on site. The 2.4 GHz choice is deliberate: it holds less throughput than 5 GHz but penetrates walls considerably better, so a camera in a far room usually stays connected where a 5 GHz link would already be falling apart. The flip side is that in an apartment block this band is crowded with dozens of neighbouring networks, and if the router sits behind two load-bearing walls the video will break up exactly at the moment something happens. Power is 5 V over Micro-USB, drawing from 1.65 W in the basic mode to 2.75 W at maximum with the IR illuminator on, which means a power bank can keep it alive through an outage — but there is no internal battery, so a socket nearby is mandatory. The H.265 stream occupies anywhere from 80 kbps to 4 Mbps, so two or three of these cameras live comfortably on a normal home connection, while six on a single router is a scenario that should be planned with wired models instead.

Storage: microSD up to 256 GB, H.265 and the DMSS ecosystem

Recording goes to a microSD card of up to 256 GB, and that is genuinely autonomous storage: the camera keeps writing when the internet drops, you simply lose the live view until it returns. H.265 compresses roughly twice as efficiently as H.264 at comparable quality, so in practice a continuous stream of around 2 Mbps fills a 256 GB card in about eleven to twelve days of non-stop recording. Switch to event-based recording — person detected, sound alarm — and the same card stretches across months, which for a flat is usually the more sensible mode than round-the-clock capture. Management, playback and notifications all run through Dahua's DMSS app, the same one that serves the wired cameras and recorders of the brand, so a mixed installation stays in a single window. What the official C5A specification does not include is an ONVIF line: unlike the wired Dahua 2xxx series, this camera should not be bought with a third-party NVR in mind, because it is built around its own ecosystem.

Where this camera belongs and the jobs it was designed for

This is a classic indoor cube camera: a living room, a nursery, a hallway with the front door in view, a home office, a single-till retail point or a shop back room. The most practical spot is a shelf or cabinet in a corner at 1.5-2 metres: the 90° angle covers the whole room, and the face of anyone walking in enters the frame at three to four metres, where it can still be identified with confidence. For keeping an eye on a nanny, an elderly relative or a parcel left inside the stairwell, the two-way audio format fits almost perfectly — you hear and you answer, without having to teach anyone how to use the equipment. Where the camera clearly does not belong is outdoors: the housing is plastic, it carries no ingress protection rating at all, and the -10…+45 °C operating range means a façade mounting would not survive a Ukrainian winter even under an eave. It is equally wrong for round-the-clock colour coverage of a large area — a yard, a warehouse, a car park — where wired outdoor models with 30-50 metre illumination and PoE power are the correct answer.

How it differs from the neighbouring models in this catalogue

The closest relative here is the Dahua DH-C4K-P: also an indoor cube, but with a 4 MP sensor instead of 5 MP and, more importantly, with an RJ-45 port and PoE power alongside Wi-Fi. If the camera goes into a hallway that already has a cable run, the C4K-P is simply more stable by connection principle, whereas the C5A wins where no cable can be pulled and the finest possible detail is wanted. If the camera has to go outside, no cube model will do — look at the Dahua DH-T5A-PV instead: the same wireless logic and the same 5 MP, but an IP67 housing plus a spotlight and siren for active deterrence. When the point is to follow a person moving across the room rather than simply watch it, you need a motorised model — the Dahua DH-P5AS-PV with pan and tilt, or the cheaper Imou Ranger 2; the C5A looks in one fixed direction and that is a hard limitation. Conversely, if all you want is a basic baby monitor with no security ambitions, this catalogue holds cheaper 3 MP indoor Imou cameras — just be aware that several of them have no human detection at all and will alert you on every shadow.
